Typical Budget - High School and Middle School

Typical Breakdown of Expenditures
Per High School for 5 courses (adding one per year)

  • Professional Development - $ 25,000 (most attend MSOE) - includes travel, stipend, room & board
  • Equipment - $ 20,000 (most can be purchased locally)
  • Possible Total - $ 45,000 without computer lab; $71,000 with computer lab

Typical Breakdown of Expenditures
Per Middle School for 4 modules for 5 years

  • Professional Development - $ 10,000- includes travel, stipend, room & board
  • Equipment - $ 14,000
  • Possible Total - $ 24,000 without computer lab; $ 50,000 with computer lab

Variances will occur depending on which of the PLTW “specialty” courses are offered in the junior year, the stipend earned by the teacher during the summer training, and travel expenses for teachers and counselors. In addition, some schools remodel workspace, train additional teachers, upgrade or replace computers, or must equip prototype labs with items such as drills, hammers, saws and supplies.

Examples of these variances are:

Schools that choose to do the Computer Integrated Manufacturing specialty course with all new equipment would add $35,000 to the high school total.

Schools needing to replace an entire computer lab would add $26,000 to the above total.

Schools without any tech ed supplies would add $5,000 to the above total.

Many schools, especially small schools, are looking at working together to offer the entire PLTW program. There are many models for implementing PLTW and the Foundation encourages schools to be creative and work together if necessary.
