What is the PLTW program?


The PLTW program is a tool to create the workforce of the future. PLTW delivers:

  • updated, relevant, project-based curricula at the middle and high school levels meeting national math and science standards;
  • high quality professional development for teachers;
  • annual training for guidance counselors;
  • a network of 100 schools in 46 states so far.
    Annual assessments of the PLTW program reveal it is having a positive impact.

High School PLTW Program
o Four year flexible sequence of five courses

  • Principles of Engineering
  • Introduction to Engineering Design
  • Digital Electronics
  • Computer Integrated Manufacturing ** (junior year)
  • Engineering Design and Development (senior year)
  • ** Other courses in Bioengineering, Aerospace, or Civil/Architectural Engineering may be substituted or offered as an alternative to CIM

o Two-week, intensive Summer Institute Training for teachers
o One-day, annual conference for guidance counselors
o Local Partnership Team to provide program feedback and enhancement

Middle School PLTW Program
o Seven-module “Gateway to Technology” sequence of courses
o Implementation is flexible to begin in sixth, seventh or eighth grade
o Courses include:

  • Design and Modeling
  • The Magic of Electrons
  • The Science of Technology
  • Automation and Robotics
